Tibetan National Uprising Day
(Rizvi College, Bombay | March 10, 2007)
Bombay: Friends of Tibet in association with Rizvi College, Bandra, Bombay commemorated the 48th Anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day by screening the documentary film 'Devotion and Defiance' at the Seminar Room on March 10, 2007. The film screening was followed by a question and answer session with students of Journalism and Mass Media.
CA Kallianpur, National Co-ordinator, Friends of Tibet welcomed the gathering and spoke about the significance of Tibetan National Uprising Day of March 10, 1959 when the people in Lhasa rose in revolt against the Chinese occupation and recounted the chronology of events that ultimately led to the His Holimess the Dalai Lama's exile and escape of thousands of Tibetans into exile in India. About the documentary 'Devotion and Defiance' Kallianpur added a caveat that watching it might give the impression that the Tibetan issue boils down to only religious repression which is not the case. But that the issue was much larger and touches on colonialism, independence etc.
Hozesa Merchant, a student of Rizvi College and a member of Friends of Tibet was instrumental in arranging the programme . Rohit Singh, Campaigner of Friends of Tibet and Tenzin Bhuthi a young Tibetan from Kalimpong now working in Mumbai were also present.
