Delegates to Chinas Communist Party Congress ended months of
speculation today, confirming that Mr Jiang Zemin would step down as
Party Chief and make way for a new generation of leaders this week.
Five other leaders, including Parliament Chief Li Peng and Premier
Zhu Rongji, would also retire from the seven-man Politburo Standing
Committee in the first peaceful and orderly succession in the
history of Communist China, they said.
