Zuma Asked To Support Anti-China Motion
(Sapa | March 14, 2000)

African National Congress Daily News Briefing Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma should tell MPs whether South Africa would support a motion before the United Nations Human Rights Commission condemning human rights violations in China, Dr Boy Geldenhuys (NNP) said.

The motion might be considered by the commission in Geneva later this month, he said in debate on the foreign affairs budget on Tuesday.

"The NNP believes that such a motion should be tabled and that the PRC (People's Republic of China) should be condemned for human rights violations in Tibet, in Xinjiang Province, and for oppressing freedom of worship and jailing political dissidents."

Dlamini-Zuma will visit China later this month in preparation for a visit by Chinese President Jiang Zemin in April to South Africa and the region.
